A newsmagazine owner’s life goal comes to fruition after 26 years when she writes this new book of musings released by Dog Ear Publishing.

Inspiration can hit in surprising ways, and that’s the case for Sue Veryser and her new book. Becoming impatient after years of telling her to keep following her dream, Veryser’s father threw a wadded piece of paper at her that said simply “Just Finish That Damn Book!” That phrase proved to be the perfect title for her collection of musings, recollections and columns.

Written in a casual style, each chapter of “That Damn Book: Letters from the Ledge – Part One” tells its own story, whether it’s meant to be sentimental, humorous or profound. Veryser freely shares bits of her life story growing up as one of three girls and two boys in a Catholic household in Michigan with lots of rules but always knowing she was loved.

Veryser’s deft hand with words runs the gamut, from the difficulty of the craft of writing (“There is nothing more annoying than a blank piece of paper and an empty, flashing cursor.”) to the consequences of a falling fly strip when a cat is in the house (“To my dismay and horror, however, I found Owen stuck to the fly strip.”) to her struggles with bulimia (“Two more pounds, the doctors said, and my brain would have just stopped telling my heart to beat. Two pounds. That’s all that stood between me and the grave.”)

In the end, the book takes readers from laughter to tears to the realization that staying true to oneself is the ultimate test of survival and purpose in life – a reminder that sometimes all it takes is stepping back from the ledge.

“Every person has moments in life that draw them to the edge of the ledge.
It’s about learning how to cope with all the drama life throws at you that will keep you from taking that final fatal step.”

Author Sue Veryser has owned newspapers and magazines since 1991 and has written innumerable columns, but she has always dreamed about writing books. Hailing from Chesterfield Township, Mich., Veryser has been writing since she was 9, inspired by her grandmother asking her to create stories about photos torn out of gossip publications. She plans to write eight other books in the That Damn Book series and will marry her childhood crush this year.
